Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has pledged to fight impeachment charges, which accuse him of enriching himself, inciting ethnic hatred, and undermining the government.

Ahead of a parliamentary hearing on Tuesday, Gachagua asserted his innocence and refused to step down, despite tensions with President William Ruto. Gachagua, who supported Ruto’s 2022 electoral victory, claims he has since been marginalized.

The impeachment process, initiated by Ruto’s coalition allies, could proceed if two-thirds of the National Assembly votes in favor, sending the matter to the Senate. Gachagua, who faces allegations of amassing unexplained wealth and stoking ethnic division, remains defiant, declaring, “I will fight to the end.”
