Namibia’s 82-year-old President Hage Geingob has been diagnosed with cancer following a recent medical check-up, as revealed by an official statement from his office on Friday.

While the statement did not delve into specific details about the type or severity of the cancer, it assured the public that President Geingob would undergo necessary treatment while maintaining his commitment to fulfilling presidential duties.

This health revelation comes at a crucial time for Namibia, as the nation is gearing up for presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of 2024.

Despite the health challenge, President Geingob’s office affirmed his determination to actively engage in the responsibilities of his office during the ongoing treatment.

This isn’t the first encounter with cancer for President Geingob; in 2014, during his tenure as prime minister, he openly shared with the public that he had successfully battled prostate cancer. Subsequently, he assumed the presidency the following year.

The news of his current diagnosis adds another layer to his health narrative, prompting heightened attention and concern from both the Namibian public and the international community

“As part of regular annual medical examinations, the Presidency informed the Namibian public that the head of state was due for a colonoscopy and a gastroscopy on 8 January 2024, which were followed up with a biopsy, of which the results revealed cancerous cells,” the presidency statement said.

The statement added: “On the advice of the medical team, President Geingob will undertake appropriate medical treatment to deal with the cancerous cells.”
