Britain is set to rally support from United Nations Security Council members for a resolution demanding an end to hostilities in Sudan and the safe delivery of humanitarian aid, according to the British foreign ministry.

As holder of the Council’s rotating presidency, British Foreign Minister David Lammy will chair a vote on a draft resolution co-sponsored by the UK and Sierra Leone. The resolution also emphasizes the protection of civilians amid Sudan’s devastating conflict.

“The UK will never let Sudan be forgotten,” Lammy is expected to affirm while announcing the doubling of British aid to Sudan to £226 million ($285 million).

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a violent power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, thwarting a planned transition to civilian rule. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and sparked the world’s largest displacement crisis.

In his address, Lammy will also denounce restrictions by Israel on humanitarian aid in Gaza, call for an immediate ceasefire, and advocate for the release of hostages. On the war in Ukraine, he will reiterate Britain’s unwavering support for Kyiv, saying, “We will keep standing with Ukraine until reality dawns in Moscow.”

Lammy is scheduled to address the media alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha after the session.
