Nigerian authorities are seeking the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a controversial leader of a banned secessionist group, following his arrest in Finland on terrorism charges.

Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian origin, is accused of inciting violence in Nigeria’s southeast region, where a bloody civil war was fought in the late 1960s. Despite being disavowed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the group he claims to lead, Ekpa has continued to stir unrest through social media.
Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa on suspicion of inciting violence against civilians and public authorities in Nigeria. Four others were also detained in connection with financing his activities.

Nigerian officials have expressed satisfaction with Ekpa’s arrest, viewing it as a significant step in their fight against terrorism. However, past extradition attempts have been unsuccessful, with Finnish authorities citing Ekpa’s rights as a Finnish citizen.
