Congo’s Health Ministry announced Thursday that the country has achieved a zero fatality rate among new mpox cases, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the epidemic.
The case fatality rate for the current outbreak dropped from 0.41% to 0% in the past week, highlighting the progress made in managing the disease.
To further combat the epidemic, the ministry has launched the second phase of the mpox vaccination campaign, prioritizing the provinces most affected by the outbreak, including Equateur, Sud-Kivu, Tshopo, Sankuru, and Bas-Uele.
Since the epidemic began, Congo has reported 53,860 suspected mpox cases and 1,255 deaths. Despite the zero fatalities in recent cases, the overall case fatality rate for suspected cases remains at 2.33%, a slight improvement from 2.39% the previous week.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared mpox a public health emergency on August 14, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to control the outbreak.
