Colorado Rapids President Pádraig Smith shared his excitement about the signings, stating:

“We are excited to welcome Chidozie and Ian to the Rapids. Chidozie is a leader and a powerful defender with vast experience in Europe and on the international stage, while Ian has established himself as an athletic and accomplished defender in MLS.

“Both players are strong fits for our game model, and they bring added quality to our group as we look to build off a successful 2024 season and continue strengthening our team.”

At 27, Awaziem brings a wealth of experience to Colorado. In his sole season at FC Cincinnati, he made 14 appearances and contributed three assists. His European career includes stints with FC Porto and Boavista FC in Portugal and Hajduk Split in Croatia, where he won the Croatian Football Cup in 2023.

On the international stage, Awaziem has represented Nigeria’s Super Eagles 33 times. He featured in six matches during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and played at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Awaziem joins the Rapids with a contract that runs through 2025, including options for 2026 and 2027. His addition bolsters Colorado’s defense as they gear up for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.

The Rapids will face Los Angeles FC in Round One, with match dates yet to be announced.
