Workers at Lagos Eko FM, Traffic Radio, and Lagos Television have threatened to embark on a strike if the Lagos State Government fails to address their demands, including their inclusion in the Oracle payroll system for public servants.
The workers, represented by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), made the resolution during a joint congress, setting January 6, 2025, as the commencement date for the industrial action.
The proposed strike is aimed at drawing attention to the poor working conditions across the three state-owned media stations.
According to a reliable source, the unions have already sent an official notice of the industrial action to relevant authorities, adhering to the 21-day notice required by law.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, some staff members justified the strike, stating that the management teams lack the financial capacity to meet the new wage bill following the implementation of the minimum wage in Lagos State.
The workers also criticized the boards of management for attempting to seek an increase in government subvention, describing the move as unsustainable and retrogressive.
As tensions rise, the unions are urging the Lagos State Government to act swiftly to prevent a disruption in operations across the stations.
