Moses Jitoboh, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police and one-time aide-de-camp (ADC) to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has passed away at the age of 54.
Jitoboh reportedly died on Friday after a brief illness. His death was confirmed in a statement on Saturday by Adebola Hamzat, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 16, Bayelsa State.
Describing Jitoboh as a dedicated and selfless officer, Hamzat said, “The passing of DIG Jitoboh is a great loss, not only to his immediate family but also to Bayelsa State, the Nigeria Police Force, and the nation at large. His dedication to service and integrity will never be forgotten.”
Jitoboh held several key positions in the Nigeria Police Force, including DIG Research and Planning, and Information & Communications Technology (ICT) at the Force Headquarters.
He served as ADC to Jonathan during his tenure as Bayelsa State Governor, Vice-President, and eventually President of Nigeria. After Jonathan’s exit from office in 2015, Jitoboh returned to active police service.
In 2021, he was overlooked for the position of Inspector General of Police (IGP) when former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Usman Baba. Following Kayode Egbetokun’s appointment as IGP in 2023, Jitoboh was compulsorily retired, despite being Egbetokun’s superior.
Jitoboh later challenged his retirement in court, arguing it violated Nigeria’s public service rules and the Police Act of 2020.
His contributions to the Nigeria Police Force remain a testament to his dedication and service to the nation.
