South Africa’s MK Party leader, Jacob Zuma and the party’s national high command have suspended three members of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature for alleged misconduct and violations of the party’s constitution.

The affected members include Thobani Zuma, Sfiso Zuma, and Chief Whip Kwazi Mbanjwa.

Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela announced the decisions:

  • Kwazi Mbanjwa: Removed from his position as Chief Whip and suspended as a member of the KZN provincial legislature, pending the outcome of a disciplinary process.
  • Thobani Zuma: Suspended as a member of the KZN provincial legislature with immediate effect, pending disciplinary proceedings.
  • Sfiso Zuma: Issued a cautionary suspension as caucus manager, also pending disciplinary action.

“These comrades are advised to present their cases to the national disciplinary committee during their respective hearings,” Ndhlela said.

Mbanjwa faces accusations of defying party directives, including refusing to relinquish control of the party’s bank accounts. A leaked letter signed by MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu detailed the allegations, stating that Mbanjwa failed to transfer control of party accounts to the provincial convener Willies Mchunu, treasurer-general Dr. Thanti Mthanti, and party leader Inkosi Chiliza by the December 4, 2024 deadline.

The letter also alleges that on December 10, 2024, Mbanjwa unilaterally communicated confidential party information to third parties without authorization from the party president or national high command.

Ndhlela reiterated the MK Party’s commitment to discipline and integrity within its ranks. “As an organisation committed to demonstrating discipline and accountability, the MK Party must lead society with dignity and integrity from within its own structures,” she stated.

The party emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for ill-discipline and vowed to address internal issues transparently and decisively. This action underscores the party’s efforts to maintain internal order and uphold its values while dealing with alleged irregularities among its members.
