Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, aged 91 and the world’s longest-serving head of state, has hinted at seeking an eighth term in the country’s 2025 presidential election.
In his New Year’s address, Biya reaffirmed his commitment to leading the nation, signaling his intent to extend his four-decade rule.
Biya, who has been in power since 1982, would be 92 at the time of the election.
His limited public appearances in recent months have fueled widespread speculation about his health, intensifying political debates across the nation.
Despite government assurances that the president remains capable of governing, a controversial 2024 ban on media discussions about his health has sparked criticism, with observers raising fresh concerns about press freedom in Cameroon.
