At least five Cameroonian soldiers were killed, and several others injured, in an attack by gunmen from Nigeria in the border village of Bakinjaw, located in southwestern Cameroon.

The attack, which occurred early Friday, was confirmed by Aka Martin Tyoga, Member of Parliament for the Akwaya district, and Agwa Linus, the traditional ruler of Bakinjaw.

According to MP Tyoga, hundreds of armed Fulani herdsmen crossed the border from Taraba State, Nigeria, and targeted a Cameroonian military post in what appeared to be a retaliatory strike.

The assault was reportedly in response to the killing of several herdsmen by Cameroonian soldiers the previous day.

Traditional ruler Agwa Linus revealed that his home was also set ablaze during the attack. “This is not the first time such an incident has occurred — it is deeply unfortunate,” he lamented.

The attack marks yet another escalation in the ongoing conflict along the Nigeria-Cameroon border, where territorial disputes and tensions between local communities have fueled repeated violence.
