The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given the green light to telecommunications companies to increase their tariffs by up to 50%.

This decision comes after the telcos requested a 100% tariff hike due to rising operational costs.

According to the NCC, the tariff adjustment is necessary to address the widening gap between operational costs and stagnant tariffs, which have remained unchanged since 2013.

The commission ensured that the approved adjustment balances consumer protection with industry sustainability.

The 50% tariff increase is expected to enable telecom operators to maintain and expand their services, improve network quality, and expand coverage to underserved areas. The NCC has directed operators to clearly educate consumers on the new rates and demonstrate measurable improvements in service delivery.

The tariff hike has sparked mixed reactions, with some stakeholders expressing concerns about the potential impact on consumers, while others see it as a necessary step to ensure the sustainability of the telecom industry.
