At least 20 fishermen were killed in Gadan Gari, a fishing community in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, following an attack by Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday. The incident was confirmed by fishermen and local security personnel on Thursday.
The attack occurred around 11:00 GMT, with insurgents storming the area and opening fire on fishermen who were working at the time, according to Modu Ari, a member of the civilian joint task force.
Mustapha Kacahallah, a resident of the community, mourned the loss of his child in the assault and disclosed that more than 15 victims had already been buried.
Borno State, a region heavily affected by a 16-year-long insurgency led by Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), continues to grapple with devastating human and economic losses. The conflict has resulted in mass displacement, a humanitarian crisis, and significant fatalities.
As of now, neither the Nigerian military nor Borno state officials have issued a statement regarding the attack.
