Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has instructed the country’s defense forces to prepare for the withdrawal of its troops from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

This decision comes after a rebel alliance, including M23 fighters, declared a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, starting Tuesday.

The Malawi troops are part of a regional peacekeeping mission deployed in Congo to help tackle armed insurgents.

The Southern African regional bloc had extended the military mission late last year.

However, with the recent ceasefire declaration, President Chakwera has ordered the withdrawal to honor the agreement and pave the way for negotiations towards lasting peace.

The conflict in eastern Congo has been marked by violence and instability, involving various armed groups.

The international community has been pushing for a resolution, advocating for peace and stability to allow for the safe return of displaced individuals.
