US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order freezing financial aid to South Africa due to the country’s new land law, which Trump claims violates people’s rights.
The move escalates a dispute between the two nations, sparked by Trump’s earlier threat to cut funding without providing evidence that South Africa was confiscating land.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended the land policy, stating it aims to ensure equitable public access to land.
The new law allows for land seizures without compensation in specific circumstances, such as unused property or property posing a risk to people.
The US will also formulate a plan to resettle South African farmers and their families as refugees.
