MTN Nigeria has raised the prices of its data plans following the implementation of a 50% tariff hike recently approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The updated prices show that MTN’s 1.8GB monthly plan now costs ₦1,500, replacing the previous 1.5GB plan priced at ₦1,000. Similarly, the 20GB plan has increased from ₦5,500 to ₦7,500, while the 15GB plan now costs ₦6,500, up from ₦4,500.

In addition to data price adjustments, all major telecom operators, including Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile, have raised the cost of text messages from ₦4.00 to ₦6.00 in line with the NCC’s approval.

The NCC had announced the tariff adjustment on January 20, citing rising operational costs and the need to sustain the industry.

However, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has vowed to challenge the price hike in court, arguing that there was inadequate consultation with key stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has defended the decision, stating that the approval ensures the viability of the telecom industry. It clarified that operators are not mandated to implement the full 50% increase immediately and may choose to keep their rates unchanged if sustainable.

Telecom companies received final approval for the new tariff plans on Monday and are in the process of updating their pricing structures.
