The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) has elected Honorable Ogechukwu Nkere as its new Prime Minister, succeeding Simon Ekpa who was relieved of his position.
Nkere, who previously served as ActingE Prime Minister and Finance Minister, was unanimously elected by the cabinet on January 14, 2026.
Ekpa, who was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison in Finland for terrorism charges in 2025, had been leading the BRGIE since 2023.
The BRGIE is a separatist group seeking independence for the Biafra region in southeastern Nigeria.
The group’s leadership change comes amid ongoing tensions and controversies surrounding its activities.
