A devastating bus accident in Ethiopia’s Oromiya region has left at least 26 people dead, with officials warning that the toll may rise. The state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting reported that the bus was en route from Shambu, in western Ethiopia, to the capital, Addis Ababa, when it overturned.

Deadly road accidents are frequent in Ethiopia, where poor driving conditions and poorly maintained vehicles contribute to high casualty rates. In December, a separate incident in the southern Sidama region claimed at least 71 lives when a truck carrying passengers plunged into a river.

Officials continue to monitor the situation as rescue efforts and investigations proceed.
