Heavily armed terrorists launched a coordinated assault on Djibo, the capital of Soum Province in Burkina Faso’s Sahel Region, early Tuesday morning, engaging security forces in a prolonged firefight. According to intelligence sources, the attack began around 6:30 a.m., with militants storming the city from multiple directions, triggering intense gunfire and explosions.
As of 9:30 a.m., the confrontation was still ongoing, and the extent of casualties and damages remained unclear. The attack underscores the worsening security crisis in Djibo, a strategic town that has been under siege by jihadist groups since 2022, leading to food shortages and humanitarian distress.
In a separate attack, another group of terrorists struck Gorgadji, a town in Séno Province, around 9:20 a.m. Though details on casualties are yet to be confirmed, Gorgadji has a history of violent insurgent attacks, including a 2021 massacre that left over 80 people dead.
