On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, suspected militants of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) launched a devastating attack on Sakoira town in Niger’s Tillabéri region.

This latest attack comes just weeks after a previous raid on January 6, 2025, where armed militants targeted the same town, looting financial institutions, seizing vehicles, and killing a member of the local self-defense militia.

The recurring attacks on Sakoira highlight the growing security challenges in the region.

Located near the tri-border area with Mali and Burkina Faso, the Tillabéri region has been plagued by extremist violence in recent years.

Insurgent groups have carried out attacks on civilians, security forces, and government infrastructure, prompting concerns about the escalating instability.

While authorities have yet to issue an official statement, security sources confirm that military reinforcements have been deployed to the area to address the situation.
