A deadly attack was carried out by suspected Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) fighters on a Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) headquarters in Koulpélogo province, Burkina Faso, near the border with Togo.
The assault occurred on the night of February 20, with local sources confirming that the militants successfully overrun the facility.
According to a subsequent report, JNIM claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that eight VDP fighters were killed in coordinated raids on three villages near the Togo border.
The group also claimed to have seized firearms and motorcycles from the security volunteers.
This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents perpetrated by Islamist armed groups in Burkina Faso.
Since 2016, these groups have been responsible for numerous attacks on civilians, including massacres, summary executions, and forced displacement.
