The United Kingdom has decided to pause some of its bilateral aid to Rwanda due to the country’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This move comes as a response to Rwanda’s alleged support of the M23 rebel group, which has been linked to human rights abuses and violence in eastern Congo.
The UK government has stated that it will cease high-level attendance at events hosted by the Rwandan government, limit trade promotion activities, and pause direct bilateral financial aid. However, aid to the poorest and most vulnerable populations will continue.
The UK will also review export licenses for the Rwanda Defence Force and suspend future defense training assistance.
This decision reflects growing international concern over Rwanda’s role in the Congo conflict.
The UK’s move may pressure Rwanda to reconsider its involvement and work towards a peaceful resolution.
