Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa has alleged that his successor, Mojisola Meranda, agreed to step down during a peace meeting with party leaders.

Meranda replaced Obasa in January after he was removed from office, a decision he has consistently rejected. However, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Obasa claimed Meranda openly announced her resignation during a reconciliation meeting.

“There was a meeting at Marina with all the party leaders and Assembly members, and Meranda herself declared that she had stepped down,” Obasa stated.

His remarks followed the withdrawal of Meranda’s security aides earlier in the day, a move he justified by asserting that her resignation meant she no longer required official security.

“When you resign from office, the paraphernalia of office is taken away,” Obasa, who represents Agege 1 Constituency, added. However, later on Thursday, the police restored Meranda’s security details, explaining that the withdrawal was due to an ongoing personnel audit.

Obasa was impeached in January over allegations of financial misconduct, which he has denied. Making his first visit to the Assembly complex since his removal, he arrived with security operatives and supporters, insisting he remained the rightful Speaker.

“I’ve never been removed. Impeachment is constitutional and democratic, but due process must be followed. If it’s not followed, then it’s illegal,” he argued.

“Obasa is Speaker,” he declared. Despite Obasa’s claims, 36 lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly have passed a vote of confidence in Meranda, reaffirming her position as Speaker.
