A massive influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo has arrived in Burundi, with nearly 63,000 people fleeing the conflict in just a month.

The situation is dire, with thousands sheltering in a crowded stadium in Rugombo, just a few kilometers from the border.

Conditions at the Stadium

The stadium is severely overcrowded, with over 45,000 displaced people competing for limited space and resources. Sanitary conditions are poor, with only 10 to 15 latrines available for tens of thousands of people.

Many families have been forced to camp in open fields nearby, exposing them to the elements and further hardship.

The Refugee Crisis

The refugees include a large number of unaccompanied children separated from their families.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged countries to contribute to its emergency appeal for $40.4 million to support the potential influx of 258,000 refugees into Burundi, Tanzania, and Zambia.

The Conflict

The conflict in eastern Congo is rooted in the spillover of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide and the struggle for control of Congo’s vast mineral resources. The M23 rebel group, allegedly backed by Rwanda, has been fighting the Congolese army. Rwanda denies these allegations, claiming it is defending itself against a Hutu militia.

The situation remains critical, with aid efforts struggling to keep pace with the influx of refugees.
