President Lazarus Chakwera has lifted entry visa fees for travellers from 79 countries in a move aimed at bolstering Malawi’s tourism sector.

In a statement late Thursday, the Ministry of Information said Chakwera had approved an amendment to the Immigration Act with respect to visa requirements for individuals wishing to travel to Malawi.

“President Lazarus Chakwera has lifted entry visa fees for travellers from 79 countries in an effort to boost tourism and trade in the country,” the ministry said.

The waiver became effective on February 7 and countries benefiting from this waiver include Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Jamaica, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Israel and the United States.

The Malawi government has amended the Immigration Act, effective from 7 February, with the aim of streamlining entry procedures and facilitating smoother access for international visitors.

Under the revised regulations, nationals from the Southern African Development Community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa do not require visas when entering Malawi.

Diplomats, government officials and holders of travel documents issued by organisations such as the United Nations and African Union are also exempt from visa requirements when conducting official business in Malawi.

The duration of multiple entry visas has been extended, offering options for stays of up to 6 or 12 months.
