Liberia has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza on a poultry farm in Bong county, where 18 birds out of a flock of 26,000 died in February, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said, citing Liberian authorities.
As a response, 25,800 poultry in the flock were vaccinated, although the timing of the vaccination was not specified.
The disease, commonly known as bird flu, has spread globally in recent years, resulting in the culling of hundreds of millions of poultry.
The WOAH report highlights the ongoing risk of avian influenza transmission and the need for continued vigilance in monitoring and controlling outbreaks.
The Liberian authorities’ swift response to the outbreak, including vaccination of the flock, aims to prevent further spread of the disease and mitigate its impact on the poultry industry.
