Scores of opposition supporters protested outside a Tunis court on Friday as the trial of over 40 politicians and other figures accused of conspiring against the state and President Kais Saied resumed.
The defendants include prominent opposition politicians such as Nejib Chebbi, leader of the National Salvation Front, who face a range of conspiracy charges.
Authorities say the defendants tried to destabilize the country and overthrow Saied, while rights groups say the trial highlights Saied’s control over the judiciary and amounts to a crackdown on dissent.
The trial, which started in March, has been postponed twice, and more than 20 other people have fled abroad since being charged.
