Tanzania’s main opposition party, CHADEMA, has announced that its leader Tundu Lissu, who was charged with treason last week, has been transferred to Ukonga Prison.
The party had previously reported that Lissu’s whereabouts were unknown, sparking concerns about his safety.
Lissu, the runner-up in the 2020 presidential election, was charged over a speech allegedly calling for public rebellion and disruption of the upcoming election.
The charges have raised scrutiny of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s human rights record as she seeks re-election.
