Tanzanian police have detained two senior opposition figures, John Heche and John Mnyika, as they drove to a court hearing for party leader Tundu Lissu, who has been charged with treason.

The CHADEMA party officials were stopped on their way to Kisutu Magistrate Court in Dar es Salaam.

The reason for their detention is unclear, and police spokespersons have not yet commented. The move comes amid concerns about human rights and civic freedom in Tanzania.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has pledged to respect human rights and investigate abductions of government critics.

Lissu, who was runner-up in the 2020 presidential election, faces treason charges over a speech allegedly inciting rebellion.

CHADEMA has been disqualified from upcoming elections for failing to sign an election code of conduct on time, a decision the party deems unconstitutional.
