Panic swept through Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi in Kwara State on Thursday morning after reports claimed that suspected bandits had invaded the premises.

The Kwara State Police Command quickly responded around 9:15 a.m. on June 18, 2026. Officers from the Oke-Oyi Division were deployed to secure the school and confirm the situation for students, staff, and residents.

But the command’s investigation found no threat. According to Police Public Relations Officer Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the scare began when a woman ran into the school claiming bandits were in the community. The unverified claim spread fast and disrupted classes before police could confirm that it was false.

“The Command’s assessment confirmed that the report was entirely false and without any factual basis. There was no bandit attack, no sighting of bandits, and no security breach within the school or anywhere in Oke-Oyi community or Kwara State,” the police said in a statement.

Kwara Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, condemned the spread of false security information. He warned that such rumors can create unnecessary fear and pull officers away from real emergencies.

“The dissemination of unverified information, particularly on sensitive security matters, undermines public confidence and may divert critical security resources from genuine emergencies,” CP Adekimi stated.

The police said they have started efforts to identify the woman who raised the alarm. She will be questioned and prosecuted under laws covering false information and acts likely to breach public peace.

The command is urging residents to stay calm and vigilant, and to avoid sharing rumors. It also advised the public to verify security reports through official channels and report suspicious activity directly to the nearest police station.

The police reaffirmed that security measures remain active across Kwara State.
