Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has joined a chorus of nationwide celebrations following Remo Stars’ historic first-ever Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title win, gifting the newly crowned champions N10 million in appreciation of their remarkable achievement.
Osimhen personally called the team via video and later rewarded the players with N5 million and the technical crew with an additional N5 million. Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede confirmed the gesture, which added to the wave of accolades pouring in for the Ikenne-based club.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also hailed the achievement, calling it “a testament to the hard work, discipline, and unyielding spirit of the players, coaching staff, and management.” He praised club chairman Kunle Soname for his vision and commitment to grassroots football and urged the team to carry the same spirit into their upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun echoed similar sentiments, describing the feat as “unprecedented” and a proud moment for the state. “The perseverance and consistency of Remo Stars have paid off, to the admiration of every Nigerian,” the governor stated, highlighting the club’s status as the first privately owned NPFL champions since Ocean Boys in 2006.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) commended Remo Stars’ triumph, calling it a moment of “immense pride” not only for the club but for the southwest region, which hadn’t produced a league champion since Julius Berger in 2000.
Tributes also poured in from rival clubs and football figures. Rangers International celebrated the win as “extraordinary,” emphasizing that 15 years of building and hard work had finally borne fruit. Ikorodu City FC chairman Sanmi Doherty congratulated Soname, calling the achievement “a brilliant reward” for long-term private investment in football.
Heartland FC’s technical manager, Emmanuel Amuneke, hailed Remo Stars’ success as “unprecedented,” noting that the title should serve as motivation for other privately run clubs across the country. “This shows what proper planning and deliberate investment can achieve,” Amuneke said.
While the champions are still basking in their glory, their 2024/2025 NPFL campaign is not yet over. Remo Stars have three fixtures remaining: a trip to face El-Kanemi Warriors on matchday 36, a home match against Ikorodu City in Ikenne where they will be officially crowned champions on matchday 37, and a final away clash against Bayelsa United in Yenagoa.
