The International Court of Justice dismissed Sudan’s case accusing the United Arab Emirates of fueling genocide in Darfur by supplying weapons to paramilitary forces.

The court ruled it lacked jurisdiction, agreeing with the UAE’s arguments and rejecting Sudan’s request for emergency measures to prevent genocidal acts against the Masalit tribe.

The UAE hailed the decision as a legal victory, stating the case was “utterly baseless” and that the court’s finding confirms it should never have been brought.

Sudan had accused the UAE of arming the Rapid Support Forces, which has been fighting the Sudanese army in a two-year civil war, but the UAE denies the charge.

The court’s decision was made with a 14-to-2 vote, and both Sudan and the UAE are signatories to the 1948 Genocide Convention.
