Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, a respected jurist and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 89.
Uwais served as CJN from 1995 to 2006, leaving a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s judicial history. He was known for his commitment to judicial reform and independence of the judiciary.
After retiring from the Supreme Court, Uwais chaired the Electoral Reform Committee in 2007, producing a landmark report with recommendations for Nigeria’s electoral system.
Funeral arrangements are underway, with the Janazah prayer scheduled to take place at the National Mosque in Abuja after Juma’at prayers.
