The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant bust, seizing a shipment of psychoactive substances
cleverly packaged as green tea.
The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that the consignment, which appeared to be standard green tea imports, actually contained dangerous illicit drugs.
The NDLEA officers discovered the hidden substances in one of their latest seizures, and investigations are currently ongoing to determine the shipment’s origin, destination, and those involved.
This recent seizure is part of the NDLEA’s broader efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria.
In 2024, the agency seized over 2.6 million kilograms of illicit drugs, arrested more than 18,500 drug trafficking offenders, and secured over 3,250 convictions, including 10 drug barons.
Additionally, the NDLEA destroyed over 220 hectares of cannabis farms and counseled and rehabilitated more than 8,200 individuals, while organizing over 3,000 sensitization and advocacy programs across the country.
The NDLEA has been working tirelessly to dismantle drug trafficking networks and prevent the spread of drug abuse. In Kano State alone, the agency arrested 319 suspects and seized 4.7 tonnes of illicit drugs between January and March 2024.
The NDLEA has also been collaborating with other security agencies and international partners, such as the US government, to enhance its operational capabilities and combat the growing threat of illicit drugs.
With the agency’s continued efforts, Nigeria is taking steps towards creating a drug-free society and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
The NDLEA’s chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, has emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration and support from stakeholders to achieve this goal.
