Kenya’s Deputy Police Chief Steps Aside Amid Investigation into Blogger’s Death

Kenya’s Deputy Police Chief Eliud Lagat has temporarily stepped down from his position pending the completion of investigations into the death of 31-year-old blogger Albert Ojwang, whole died while in police custody.

Lagat said in a statement that he opted to step aside to allow for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.

The death of Ojwang, a schoolteacher and blogger who had reportedly criticized the police, sparked widespread protests in Nairobi, with hundreds of people taking to the streets to demand answers and justice.

As part of the investigation, two senior police officers and a closed-circuit television technician have been arrested for their alleged roles in the incident.

The technician had been called to dismantle the CCTV system at the police station where Ojwang was being held.
