Fifteen out of the 20 approved Senegalese presidential candidates are urging a new vote by April 2.

President Macky Sall, whose term ends on that date, delayed the February 25 election, causing political unrest.

While the top constitutional body overturned the decision, uncertainty remains regarding the timing and candidates for the upcoming election.

Fifteen of the original contenders signed a letter, seen on Monday, stating that “the new polling date and the date for the handover between the president and his successor must be held no later than April 2.”

They added that the list of 20 names approved in January should remain the same.

Sall has pledged to abide by the Constitutional Council’s ruling and initiate consultations for a prompt presidential election.

The signatories of the letter, including key contenders like detained Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former Dakar mayor Khalifa Sall, express frustration over the lack of action since the Council’s decision.

Notably, Prime Minister Amadou Ba, the presidential camp’s candidate, did not sign the document.
