Gunmen suspected to be bandits have brutally murdered Alhaji Abdullahi Kpotun, a prominent businessman and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward leader, along with his son, during a failed kidnapping attempt in Lile village, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The attack occurred late Tuesday night when the assailants stormed Kpotun’s residence, resulting in the deaths of both Kpotun and his son.
According to sources, the armed men didn’t stop at Kpotun’s household, attacking another family nearby and killing at least one person.
This incident is the latest in a string of violent attacks in the region, with similar incidents reported in June, including the killing of a pharmacy owner in Patigi.
The pharmacy owner was shot while the assailants attempted to abduct her, shortly after Muslim worshippers concluded the Ishai prayer.
The Kwara State Police Command has been criticized for its slow response to these attacks, with efforts to get an official response proving abortive.
The command’s spokesperson, Ejire-Adeyemi Adetoun, neither answered calls nor responded to messages seeking comment on the incident.
This recent attack underscores the rising wave of banditry in Kwara North Senatorial District, with residents calling for urgent intervention to curb the violence.
The PDP leader’s killing highlights the growing insecurity in the region, which has been plagued by attacks on communities and kidnappings.
