President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit, where leaders of emerging economies are expected to denounce Donald Trump’s hardline trade policies, particularly the imposition of punitive tariffs on allies and rivals alike.
The summit, scheduled from July 6-7, will focus on global governance reform and cooperation among the Global South Community.
Tinubu’s attendance marks a significant diplomatic milestone for Nigeria, which recently gained “partner country” status within BRICS, allowing it to participate in meetings, summits, and initiatives.
The BRICS nations, representing about half the world’s population and 40% of global economic output, are drafting a statement condemning economic uncertainty triggered by US tariff hikes, although it’s unlikely to mention the US or Trump by name.
Notable absentees include Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will participate via video link.
