Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kingibe cited the LP’s factional crisis as the reason for her decision, stating that the party is currently split into two distinct factions, which, according to her, allows her to decamp without penalty.

Kingibe expressed her commitment to the ADC, saying, “I’m totally and completely committed to ADC,” and hinted that her defection would be formalized with “fanfare.” She also noted that the ADC is still evolving and that she is excited to be a part of it.

The senator dismissed concerns that her defection might cost her the senate seat, arguing that the LP’s factional crisis provides a legitimate reason for her to leave. She asked, “Which faction of Labour Party do you want me to stay in?” emphasizing that the party’s internal divisions make it impossible for her to remain.

Kingibe’s defection is seen as a significant blow to the LP, which has been grappling with internal conflicts. Her decision to join the ADC is expected to boost the party’s chances in the 2027 general election.
