Nigeria’s immediate past High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a symbol of unwavering patriotism and integrity.
In a heartfelt statement issued on Saturday, Isola paid tribute to Buhari’s decades-long service to Nigeria, both as a military leader and a democratically elected president.
He described Buhari’s death as a “historical punctuation,” marking the end of a life defined by simplicity, discipline, and a profound commitment to national unity.
“President Buhari’s legacy as a soldier, statesman, and patriot will continue to inspire generations,” Isola said. “His simplicity, humility, and unwavering love for Nigeria endeared him to many, even in the face of challenges.”
Reflecting on Buhari’s time in office from 2015 to 2023, Isola highlighted the late president’s fight against corruption, his efforts to strengthen national institutions, and his pursuit of infrastructural development. He also praised Buhari’s approach to international diplomacy, noting that as High Commissioner from 2021 to 2023, he personally witnessed Buhari’s quiet yet resolute representation of Nigeria abroad.
“His stance on anti-corruption and national discipline resonated with global partners, especially in an era when moral courage was becoming rare,” he said.
Isola added that his appointment as Nigeria’s envoy to the UK under Buhari’s administration was “one of the greatest honors” of his career. He credited Buhari with appointing capable diplomats who embodied the president’s vision of a Nigeria recognized for its values and contribution to global peace.
Extending condolences on behalf of himself and his family, Isola prayed for Buhari’s forgiveness and eternal rest, while urging Nigerians to honor the late leader’s memory by upholding values he cherished.
“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family and the nation the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
