The returnees are fleeing difficulties in Egypt, including high living costs, limited job opportunities and challenges accessing education.

Sudanese families, totalling more than 4 million people, fled to neighboring countries after war broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023.

The Egyptian government has facilitated voluntary returns, providing free transportation for Sudanese nationals.

The Sudanese ambassador to Egypt says the returns mark an important stage for reconstruction and bringing back stability.

Despite relative calm in the capital, fighting persists in other regions, displacing millions and pushing half the population into acute hunger.
