Ghana’s Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among eight people who died in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday in the southern Ashanti region.

The crash also claimed the lives of three other officials, including Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former legislator Samuel Aboagye, as well as three airforce crew members.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the incident, stating that radar contact was lost with the Z9 airforce helicopter.

Julius Debrah, President John Mahama’s chief of staff, described the crash as a national tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
“The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” Debrah said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
