Torrential rains lashed Sao Vicente island in Cape Verde on Monday, causing devastating floods that claimed at least eight lives and displaced 1,500 people.

The heavy downpour, which dumped 193mm of rain in just five hours, overwhelmed emergency services and cut key roads, including the main road to Cesaria Evora International Airport.

Interior Minister Paulo Rocha described the night as “difficult” with panic and despair, as first responders were inundated with distress calls.

Rescue and cleanup operations are ongoing, with authorities working to restore normalcy to the island.

Tropical Storm Erin was located about 280 miles west-northwest of Cape Verde, but its impact on the situation remains uncertain.

Cape Verde is prone to flooding due to its geographical location, and climate change has increased the frequency and severity of such events.
