A man arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Ghana and Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during Friday’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield has been banned from attending football matches across the United Kingdom.
The game was briefly halted in the first half after Semenyo reported the abuse to the referee. Merseyside Police confirmed that a 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested the following day on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
He has since been released on bail, with strict conditions that bar him from entering any regulated football match in the UK or coming within a mile of any football stadium. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Despite the abuse, Ghana international Semenyo responded on the pitch by scoring twice as Bournemouth rallied from two goals down before eventually losing 4-2 to Liverpool.
Reflecting on the night, the 25-year-old forward described the experience as unforgettable, praising the solidarity shown in response to the incident.
“Football showed its best side when it mattered most,” Semenyo wrote on social media, thanking his teammates, Liverpool players and supporters, as well as Premier League officials for their professional handling of the situation.
