In a move aimed at boosting basketball development in Lagos, the state government has entered into a strategic partnership with the Nigerian arm of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The collaboration was confirmed following a meeting between Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and an NBA Nigeria delegation that included former Nigerian-American player and current ESPN analyst, Chiney Ogwumike.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the engagement as “productive,” stressing the importance of sports in youth development and community building.

“The NBA team outlined their commitment to grassroots basketball development and expressed readiness to partner with us in ways that extend beyond the game,” the governor said in a post on his official X account.

According to him, the NBA plans to leverage its global network to attract investment, improve sports infrastructure, and build the capacity of local coaches and technical staff.

The initiative will also create opportunities for young athletes to gain exposure and international recognition, aligning with the Lagos State government’s vision of using sports as a tool for empowerment, social development, and economic growth.

“Together, we can unlock the potential of our young people and position Lagos as a hub for sporting excellence,” Sanwo-Olu added.
