The Super Eagles kicked off their preparations for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures with their first training session in Uyo on Tuesday, as 15 players took to the pitch under head coach Eric Chelle.

Team captain William Troost-Ekong was among the early arrivals at camp, leading the squad into action at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. Other notable faces at the opening session included defenders Bruno Onyemaechi, Felix Agu, Chidozie Awaziem, Benjamin Fredericks, Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Calvin Bassey.

Goalkeepers Amas Obasogie and Adeleye Adebayo also featured, alongside midfield anchors Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Paris FC forward Moses Simon and Fulham’s Alex Iwobi completed the roll call of those in attendance.

More players are expected to join the camp between Tuesday night and Wednesday, including first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and recent transfer deadline signings Christantus Uche, Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare, and Cyriel Dessers. CAF Player of the Year Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and Raphael Onyedika are also due to arrive.

Nigeria will host Rwanda on Saturday, September 6, in a match-day seven clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium before travelling to Bloemfontein for a decisive encounter against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Tuesday, September 9.

The Super Eagles, currently fourth in Group C with seven points, are under pressure to secure maximum points from both fixtures to revive their fading hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
