Nigeria’s air force has killed more than 15 Islamist militia fighters in an airstrike on a hideout around the Sambisa forest in the northeastern Borno state.

The operation, carried out on September 3, targeted fighters and commanders linked to recent attacks, following intelligence and surveillance that confirmed militant activity in the area.

The airstrike destroyed key facilities used by the insurgents, according to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

This recent operation is part of a larger effort by the Nigerian military to weaken the presence of Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in the region.

The Sambisa forest has served as a stronghold for these groups since the insurgency began in 2009.

In the past eight months, the Nigerian air force claims to have killed 592 armed insurgents in Borno, following intensified airstrikes in the insurgency-hit region.
