The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the appointment of Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The announcement, made in a statement on Thursday, positions Idris at the nexus of Nigeria’s domestic oil management and international energy policy.

“NNPC congratulates Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at OPEC,” the company said.

In her new role, Idris will serve as Nigeria’s principal technical liaison within OPEC, while continuing to lead NNPC Trading Limited. She will also sit on OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), contributing to technical deliberations and policy recommendations.

Her responsibilities will include working closely with Nigeria’s OPEC Governor and national stakeholders, including NNPCL, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, to ensure Nigeria’s energy interests are effectively represented within the organization.

Idris holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Abuja and a Master’s in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland.

With over two decades of experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, she began her career at the Bureau of Public Enterprises in 1999 before joining the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative as a Petroleum Economist and Trust Fund Adviser from 2006 to 2009.

She later joined NNPC, where she rose through the ranks of the Crude Oil Marketing Division, serving in key roles such as Supervisor of Market Research, Deputy Manager of Pricing and Performance, and Manager of Pricing and Valuation.

At NNPC Trading Limited, she has held several leadership positions, including Executive Director of Crude and Condensate and Executive Director of Planning and Commercial, before being appointed Managing Director in April 2025.
