Malawi’s former President Peter Mutharika is projected to have won the presidential election held on September 16, 2025, with more than 56% of the vote, according to private broadcaster Times Television’s final unofficial results dashboard.

The electoral commission released official results late Monday, showing Mutharika with a commanding lead over incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera.

The rivalry between Mutharika and Chakwera has been intense, with their fourth showdown in the presidential election.

The two had previously faced off in 2019 and 2020, when Chakwera emerged victorious after the constitutional court annulled Mutharika’s 2019 election victory due to irregularities.

Mutharika’s presidency from 2014 to 2020 was marked by infrastructure development and lower inflation, but also allegations of cronyism.

Chakwera’s administration, on the other hand, has faced criticism for handling corruption cases selectively and slowly.

The electoral commission is expected to release more results later on Tuesday and has until the end of Wednesday to announce the full presidential election result.

A candidate needs to secure more than 50% of valid votes for an outright win; otherwise, there will be a second round of voting.
