Hundreds of protesters across Madagascar have taken to the streets for a fifth day, demanding the resignation of President Andry Rajoelina amid a severe water shortage and frequent power blackouts.

The demonstrations, which have spread across the island, have been met with force, resulting in at least 22 deaths and over 100 injuries, according to the United Nations, although the government disputes these figures.

The protests, inspired by the “Gen Z” movements in Kenya and Nepal, have been the largest Madagascar has seen in years, posing a significant challenge to Rajoelina’s government.

Despite dissolving the government, Rajoelina’s move has failed to quell the unrest, with protesters chanting “Rajoelina Out” and calling for the dissolution of the election commission, senate, and top court.

The opposition has refused to join any new government with Rajoelina in power, and Pope Francis has expressed concern over the violent clashes in the predominantly Christian nation.
